i’ve been wanting to post for a while now. i’ve had computer problems and other problems as one set of hindrances, and i’ve realized that i have a second set of internal hindrance, as well. while speaking to a candidate for political office, he explained that he needed to be “a mile wide and an inch deep,” in terms of understanding policy issues during the early stages of a campaign. after considering that prospect at length and realizing my extreme propensity to want to understand all issues “an inch wide and a mile deep,” i realized that my own propensity has created an internal block against memorializing ideas. i always feel the need to anticipate future arguments, which for me requires the greatest possible depth of understanding of any particular issue. this obsession becomes maddening, preventing me from advancing in nearly any area of study. yet, today, i recalled a thomas jefferson quote, which serves as the university of virginia’s daily student newspaper, the cavalier daily’s, editorial page masthead slogan:
“For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.”
so, i guess what i’m trying to say is, i’ve just gotta try to put it out there and invite yall to show me otherwise. though the illusion of feeling “right” is seductive, let’s proceed with the acknowledgement that no one has the monopoly on the ideal; we all need to combine our individual stengths for the better of the whole. i’m drifting here, but trust me…
